As my love for typography grew, I wanted to find a way to spread my passion across different art forms. This set of four bowls, cups, and plates is decorated with discarded lead type from the University of Iowa’s Center for the Book, which gives the letter's fonts and sizes a beautiful inconsistency.
I wanted to glaze the pieces with something that would echo the timing and reference the materials used to make the decorations. I couldn’t have been happier with the end result – on the outside there’s a black metallic matte glaze (made to look like lead), and on the inside, Yellow Salt, a nice off white imperfect matte salt glaze. These are high fire clay bodies and glazes.
The cups have my repeated ergonomic design. The spacing of the letters are tightest near the corners and spread out as the rim makes its loop. The plates have an inviting “Let’s Eat” remark, and each of the bowls have “Love” written on the corners, as well as “bowl” hidden along the rim arbitrarily. Other than that, the letters were random.
